Development Timeline

2022

Native PEP is conceived by Dr. Urs Schaffner and Prof. Fritz Häni, laying the foundation for a community-led landscape restoration programme in Kenya and Tanzania.

2023

  • Participatory workshops held across all partner communities to identify priorities for land restoration
  • The first experimental and demonstration trials co-designed with local stakeholders and established. 

2024

  • Additional trials set up in all project areas; first data collected and analysed.
  • Community members continuously informed about the results of the trials.
  • Community-led restoration practices implemented in priority areas identified by partner communities. 

2025

  • Self-help groups established and formally registered to strengthen local ownership and sustainability.
  • Community by-laws for promoting sustainable land management developed with traditional, faith-based and community leadership and implementation initiated
  • Nature-based business opportunities for local stakeholders identified, tested and promoted.

2026

  • Evidence generated demonstrating improvements in water availability, forage production, soil health, and household incomes from sustainable land management practices.
  • Engagement of schools in the local restoration activities, inspiring the next generation to become stewards of their natural environment.
  • Dissemination of project findings through national TV, printed media, and videos targeting key aspects of the project


2027 & 2028

  • Strengthen implementation of community by-laws and sustainable land management practices
  • Expand cross-community collaboration to scale up sustainable land management practices and restoration efforts.
  • ‘Champion’ schools help neighbouring schools in adopting environmental education programmes
  • Summarize and disseminate project findings for wider adoption of community-led restoration approaches.

Areas of Implementation

Kenya

  • Baringo County (central parts of the county except Kerio River Valley and northern parts of Tiaty Subcounty).
  • Isiolo County, including bordering regions in Laikipia, Meru, Samburu and Marsabit Counties.

Tanzania

Northern Tanzania in Arusha Region and adjacent areas in Kilimanjaro (Hai District) and Manyara Regions (Simanjiro District), mainly covering a belt from Lake Manyara to Arusha and Moshi (Kilimanjaro Region).
